Godzilla vs Kong sets box office on fire, grosses $123.1 million in opening weekend

Godzilla vs Kong exceeds expectations at the international box office, producing the biggest debut since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

The fourth film of the Legendary Entertainment’s MonsterVerse ‘Godzilla vs Kong’ has set the international box office on fire in its opening weekend. MonsterVerse film grossed $123.1 million during its international debut from 38 markets, surpassing the $121.8 million estimate from early predictions. The monster film is ruling the box office in most international territories it released.

Trade expert Girish Pandya shared the international box office report of the movie:

China leads the road with $69.2 million coming in the opening weekend. This is the biggest debut for a foreign film in China since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. In fact, in its opening weekend, the monster drama has bettered the lifetime earning of Tenet that was released in September last year. Tenet collected $68.2 million in its lifetime. This has made Godzilla vs. Kong the highest-grossing movie in China post-pandemic.

The last two instalments of the MonsterVerse franchise have made more money in China than in the home country the United States. The first film Godzilla released in 2014 grossed $77.6 million. Its sequel Kong: Skull Island collected $168 million in China. The third 2019 film Godzilla: King of the Monsters grossed $135 million in China.

Despite the rapid rise in COVID cases in India, Godzilla vs Kong has performed quite well. Released on March 24, 2021, the monster drama film grossed $4.9 million in its extended opening weekend. It is the best numbers posted by any film in the country post the opening of cinema halls in September 2020.

Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry. It is set to release in the United States in theaters and on HBO Max on March 31, 2021.
